By Airplane
Two main airports can be used:
Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, Porto (OPO) (www.porto-airport.com/): The Porto airport has been recently renovated. The airport is extremely easy to get to and very comfortable to fly in and out. Some of the main airlines that travel to Porto include TAP, Iberia, Lufthansa, Air Berlin, Brussels Airlines, Swiss Air, SATA Luxair, EasyJet and Ryanair. The destinations include Copenhagen, Madrid, Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Barcelona, Paris, Brussels, Liverpool, London, Bologna, Pisa and many more. During the season, the number of destinations increases exponentially. From Porto Airport to Aveiro: For those arriving at Porto Airport, the trip between the airport and the Porto-Campanhã railway station, which has direct rail connections to Aveiro, can be done by taxi for around 20-30 € and takes around 30 min. A less expensive way to reach the Porto-Campanhã railway station is to use the Metro, which has a terminal at the airport. The trips between the airport and the railway station take about 32 min and the ticket costs 1,85 € (Z4 ticket). The train journey to Aveiro takes between 40 and 75 min, depending on the type of train used. There are regular trains to Aveiro from Porto.
Lisbon International Airport (LIS) (www.lisbon-airport.com/): The Lisbon International Airport is served by all the main airlines (www.lisbon-airport.com/airlines.html) and has direct connections to all the main European cities as well as to São Paulo (Brasil) or New York/Los Angeles. From Lisbon Airport to Aveiro: For those arriving at Lisbon Airport, the simplest way to get to Aveiro is by train from Lisboa-Oriente railway station. To get to the train station, you can use a taxi, which takes about 10 minutes and costs around 10 €, the Red line of Metro de Lisboa, buying the "Viva Viagem" card (€ 0.50) along with the 1 hour Travel Ticket (€ 1.40), or bus, for example (lines 5 and 44). There are train connections from Lisboa to Aveiro every hour (2h to 2h30m journey - "IC" or "Alfa": from € 20.20 to € 37.90). More information about Portuguese Train Timetables will be available at www.cp.pt.
By road
Aveiro is located 40 min away from Porto, 2 hours from Lisbon (motorway A1) and only 2 hours from Spain (motorway A25). Distances: Coimbra 60 Km, Porto 70 Km, Vilar Formoso (spanish border) 190 Km, and Lisbon 250 Km.
Electronic tolls - There are some highways in Portugal on which the tolls are electronic only. It means that there are no cabins and the passing of vehicles is detected by devices placed at the beginning of those highways. The highways are identified at the beginning with: "Electronic toll only". For more information regarding this system please consult: www.visitportugal.com.
By train
Porto-Aveiro-Lisbon train is a good choice for those who want to reach Aveiro. Some trains take only 2,5 hours to reach Lisbon. For more information contact the portuguese railways service (CP): Tel.: 808 208 208 or see its site at www.cp.pt.
Important notes about transportation in Aveiro
Taxi - The taxi prices may vary in distance from this list of hotels or Rail-station to the university (minimum 4 € maximum 7.50 €). Bus - The system of buses in Aveiro is not so reliable as we wish and the timetables are usually not fulfilled. However, Aveiro is a small city and all places are easy to reach walking. There are two bus companies in the city – Moveaveiro (1,90€) and Urbaveiro (1€) – in both cases tickets can be purchased inside the buses.
